A map shows where different areas are located.
Level flow describes how the player experiences those areas over time.
Two levels can contain similar physical spaces yet create very different experiences depending on how objectives, choices, interactions, and transitions are arranged.
A useful starting question is:
What is the player expected to think about while moving through this area?
The answer can help define which environmental elements need attention.
A narrow path may focus attention on a single destination. A branching area may encourage comparison between several routes. An open space may encourage observation and exploration.
These choices influence the player's relationship with the environment.
Creating a Basic Flow
A simple level-flow outline might contain:
Entry → Orientation → Objective → Interaction → Decision → Transition
The entry establishes where the player begins.
Orientation helps communicate the surrounding space.
An objective gives direction.
An interaction introduces activity.
A decision creates a choice or response.
A transition moves the player into another part of the level.
This sequence can be adjusted depending on the game concept, but it provides a structured way to examine the role of each section.
Using Landmarks and Visual Information
Players often need environmental information to understand where they are and where they might go next.
A landmark can provide a visual reference point. It may be a large structure, a distinctive shape, an unusual environmental feature, or another memorable element.
When planning landmarks, developers can consider:
- Can the player see the landmark from several areas?
- Does it communicate direction?
- Is it connected to an objective?
- Does its meaning change later?
- Is it visually different from nearby elements?
Landmarks can support navigation without requiring constant written instructions.
Branching Paths
Not every level needs to follow a straight route.
Branching paths can introduce decisions and allow players to approach an area in different ways.
However, additional routes also create planning questions.
Developers may need to consider how paths reconnect, whether each route serves a clear purpose, and whether important information remains understandable regardless of the player's choice.
A branching diagram can help:
Main Route → Choice A → Shared Area
Main Route → Choice B → Shared Area
More complicated structures can include optional sections or repeated connections.
Drawing these paths before developing detailed environments can help identify confusing layouts early in the planning process.
Objectives and Environment Structure
Objectives can influence how a player reads a level.
If the goal is exploration, the environment may contain several visible points of interest.
If the goal involves reaching a specific location, environmental framing may guide attention toward that destination.
If the player needs to make several decisions, the level may provide spaces where information can be observed before choosing a direction.
This demonstrates why objective planning and level planning are closely connected.
Designing an environment without considering the player's purpose can create spaces that look interesting but contribute little to the interactive structure.
Pacing Through Space
Level flow also affects pacing.
A sequence of highly active areas may feel very different from a structure that alternates between activity and observation.
Developers can map these changes using simple labels:
Observe → Act → Recover → Explore → Decide → Act
This helps visualize how the intensity of the experience changes across the level.
Pacing does not need to follow one fixed pattern. The goal is to understand how spatial structure and gameplay activity influence one another.
Testing a Level Concept on Paper
Before building a detailed environment, a level can be reviewed as a diagram.
Start with basic shapes representing major areas.
Add arrows showing movement.
Mark objectives.
Add decision points.
Record important interactions.
Identify where the player receives information.
Then examine the complete route.
Ask whether the direction is understandable, whether important areas have a clear role, and whether the level structure supports the intended mechanics.
This form of planning can reduce unnecessary complexity later.
Connecting Levels to Broader Systems
A level rarely exists independently from the rest of the game.
Progression may change which areas are available. Mechanics may alter how the player moves through the environment. Objectives may require returning to previous locations. Game states may change the appearance or function of an area.
These relationships should be included in documentation.
A level-flow map can therefore contain notes about:
- Required mechanics
- Progression conditions
- Objective states
- Environmental changes
- Important events
- Entry and exit conditions
This turns the level diagram into part of a wider game system map.
Learning to Read the Player Journey
Level design becomes easier to study when it is viewed from the player's perspective.
Instead of asking only, “What does this area contain?” developers can ask:
“What does the player notice here?”
“What decision happens next?”
“What information is needed?”
“What system becomes active?”
“Where does this path lead?”
These questions shift attention from static space toward interactive flow.
For game development learners, this provides a useful framework for examining environments as part of a connected design.
A level is not simply a place the player visits. It is a sequence of movement, information, interaction, and decision-making.
Understanding that sequence can help learners create clearer diagrams, organize environmental ideas, and connect level structure with the wider game concept.
